Pediatric Anesthesia: A Safe and Safe “Hero’s Sleep” Journey 👶

By Anesthesiologist and Resuscitation Specialist: Ahmed Ismail Ali

The hardest moment for any mother or father is when they leave their child at the operating room door. The fear isn’t just of the surgery itself, but also of the anesthesia. To reassure you, pediatric anesthesia has become a very precise science, and it involves a kind of tenderness that makes the child feel like they’re on a journey, not in a hospital.

1. ***Why are you fasting, my love?*** The most important step starts at home with fasting. We know the child is crying and hungry, but fasting for the required hours (whether it’s milk or food) is a protective shield to ensure the stomach is completely empty and prevents any reflux during the anesthesia. Your patience with them at home is the first step to their safety.

2. ***Balloon Anesthesia, Not Needle Anesthesia*** Many children are afraid of needles. Therefore, in most cases, we begin administering anesthesia using a mask with a pleasant scent (like fruit), and we ask the child to “blow up a balloon.” Within seconds, they’ll be asleep peacefully without feeling the pain of the needle.

3. *** Calculations in Milligrams *** Infant anesthesia is not a miniature version of adult anesthesia. We calculate each dose based precisely on the child’s weight and age. Our monitoring equipment is very sensitive and gives us readings for every breath and every heartbeat of your child, as if we could hear their heartbeat with our own ears.

4. * Mom and Dad are the First Faces They See*

Our biggest concern is that the child doesn’t wake up frightened. That’s why we use medications that make the awakening gradual and gentle. As soon as they begin to regain consciousness, we prepare them to see their parents right next to them, because your presence is the best emotional comfort for them. 5. Pain medication… prevention before the pain 💊

We don’t wait for the child to wake up and say “ouch.” We give painkillers and fluids during the procedure so that when they wake up they are comfortable, able to drink, and return to normal quickly

Golden tips for every mother and father before #anesthesia#

To ensure a smooth and peaceful anesthesia experience, there are some simple yet incredibly effective things you must pay attention to:

1. Honesty (the best remedy)

Don’t tell your child, “We’re going out for a drive” or “We’re going to buy a toy,” only for them to suddenly find themselves in the hospital. Explain to him simply: “We’re going to a good doctor who’ll make you sleep a little so the pain goes away and you can be a hero.” ///Honesty builds trust that will comfort him during anesthesia///

2. Fasting is a red line 🛑

We know your heart aches when he cries from hunger, but a biscuit or a sip of juice is a betrayal of his well-being. Adhere strictly to the times specified by the anesthesiologist (whether for food, milk, or water), as this is his only safety valve for his airway.

3. Tell us about (runny nose and fever)

If your child has a runny nose, cough, or a fever the day before the operation, you must inform us. Sometimes it’s best to postpone the operation for a few days to ensure that the child’s lungs and chest are completely comfortable for the anesthesia.

4. (His favorite toy) is his companion

Let your child take his favorite toy or a special blanket he feels comfortable in to the operating room (if the hospital allows it). This gives him a sense of security in the midst of the surgery. The equipment and the doctors.

5. Be your source of calm. A baby is like a radar; they pick up on your stress immediately. If they see you scared, they’ll cry, and if they see you calm, they’ll go in calm too. Try smiling and reassuring them, and we’ll take care of the rest.

6. After the procedure… (Take a deep breath). It’s normal for a baby to wake up fussy, cry a little, or even feel dizzy. This is temporary and will pass within an hour. Your presence and calm voice will help them return to normal quickly. Thank you ❤️
